The Rise and Rise and Rise of Benedict Cumberbatch 31 JANUARY 2013 Not to be confused with Hubert Cumberdale. by Charlotte Meredith (PALATINATE)

As 2013 opens, Benedict Cumberbatch must be reminiscing about the last three years with a considerable amount of personal satisfaction. From 2010 onwards, his career has seen a meteoric rise from his small-time television drama roles to the plum offerings as the villain in the newest movie franchises: Smaug (and the Necromancer) in The Hobbit and Khan in Star Trek. Yet both his fans (including myself) and his detractors must be pondering on the same question: how did he come so far so quickly?

I believe the answer lies in one word: Sherlock. Benedict had had leading parts in television miniseries before 2010; he was the dramatic lead in both ‘To the Ends of the Earth’ (2005) and ‘The Last Enemy’ (2008). But, in spite of the critical acclaim he received for such roles his career might well have drifted into television obscurity and occasional theatrical success if it were not for his hugely popular depiction of the eponymous hero of Sherlock.

A note from our Guest Director, Benedict Cumberbatch Cambridge Science Festival is delighted to welcome Benedict Cumberbatch as the 2013 Guest Director. (UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

I’m delighted to be the Guest Director of the 2013 Cambridge Science Festival. My link to a science festival may seem a little tenuous at first glance. And yet as an actor who has researched playing Stephen Hawking, Joseph Hooker, Heisenberg and both Frankenstein and his creation I’ve long had a passion for all fields of science. It really all began at school in the biology lab and keeping mice! But ever since then and partly thanks to my ridiculously privileged existence as an actor, I have been able to keep that amateur interest and investigation of science alive and build a very personal relationship with some of my heroes from that world like Professor Hawking.

I believe science and our engagement with it has reached a crucial crossroads. Whether it’s fighting disease on a cellular scale, tackling climate change, solving food and energy crises, exploring the outer regions of the universe or simply making it easier to shop online – science and technology play an increasingly integral part of our daily lives. And yet to the layperson like me, the intellectual and ethical complexities and technical detail can often seem daunting and distancing. Hence a festival of this range and accessibility is a hugely important bridge between the public and science. While it has been an exciting time for science, with the work at CERN producing incredible results in the search for the Higgs-Boson particle, it’s vital for us to look beyond the headlines. And as while there is much to marvel at, scientific discovery is a step-bystep, day-by-day process that involves incredible hard work and devotion. Those aspects can be related to so many of our lives and other non-scientific pursuits. We hope the programme entertains and inspires you to take a deeper look at our extraordinary world and our existence in it and the universe. With Science on Saturday, the whole family is encouraged to participate in/with hands on scientific exhibits and activities. You can try anything from dissecting owl pellets to extracting and taking home your DNA and finding out what makes you you!

Lara Pulver on a Sherlock return: “It would be a pleasure – I had a lovely chemistry with Benedict” (RADIOTIMES)

The actress is ready to reprise her risque role as whip-smart dominatrix Irene Adler opposite "old friend" Benedict Cumberbatch

Paul Jones
10:34 AM, 22 January 2013

Actress Lara Pulver is ready to pick up her whip and step back into the thigh-high boots of dominatrix Irene Adler, should Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss come calling once again.

Pulver said a return to the BBC1 series “would be an absolute pleasure” and described the “lovely chemistry” she shared with its star Benedict Cumberbatch during some challenging scenes.

Pulver's role in series two episode A Scandal in Belgravia saw her dress up in S&M gear, and strip down to nothing, as her character engaged in a sexually charged battle of wits with the detective. But she said Cumberbatch had made the revealing scenes run smoothly.

“When you’re having to be that intimate with someone, barriers just come down because you’re having to trust that person, you’re having to feel very safe in their presence,” Pulver told access hollywood.

NTAs 2013: You’d expect Benedict Cumberbatch to stroll it for best actor...(RADIO TIMES)

"... but if there’s a Doctor in the house the smart money might be on last year’s winner, Matt Smith," says David Butcher ahead of this year's National Television Awards

David Butcher
12:28 PM, 11 January 2013

Television can be a snooty business. When the National Television Awards started in 1995 there were those who muttered that having the public decide on industry prizes was akin to letting the barbarians through the gates and offering them canapés.

After all, what did ordinary punters know? Much better, some thought, to do things in the traditional Bafta style, with juries of the great and the glamorous making decisions behind closed doors. Preferably the closed doors of a plush hotel, with nice goody bags to take home afterwards.

That year, Bafta anointed Between the Lines as its best drama. You may or may not remember it – Neil Pearson, police thriller, dark and moody? No, I thought not. I loved every minute and I can’t remember it, either.

From Bane to Bond: Why Tom Hardy Would Make A Brilliant 007 (CONTACT MUSIC)

With the iconic James Bond franchise set to receive a significant amount of attention at the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony given that 'Skyfall' marked the spy series' 50th anniversary as well as becoming the biggest blockbuster of the year in terms of both commercial and critical success, it's only natural that we've started to wonder about Bond number seven. After all, Daniel Craig has completed a total of three 007 flicks over the past six years and after getting wed in 2011, now might be the time to step down and enjoy some family time before he reaches 50. We've thought up a possible candidate and reckon we have some pretty good justification as to why Tom Hardy should become the next James Bond.

He's British.
Okay, so we know the others have been too, apart from George Lazenby, but with 'Skyfall' becoming the number one box office hit in 2012, it's only natural that Hollywood would want to put their stamp on it and add a taste of America to the English franchise. We think it's an absolutely essential part of portraying the secret spy that he is played by an British actor, but film making seems to have become changeable in terms of the nationality of big brand characters these days. Take iconic superheroes Spider-Man and Superman for example: 'The Amazing Spider-Man' was the latest installment in the franchise and that very American title role was scooped by Brit Andrew Garfield while Henry Cavill landed the main role in the upcoming Superman movie 'Man of Steel'. If Brits can become Americans, let's hope the opposite doesn't become of Bond.

Tom Hardy - Christmas card king Tom Hardy (CONTACT MUSIC)

The 'Dark Knight Rises' actor and his girlfriend Charlotte Riley are renowned for their festive crafty skills, and after impressing their friends with personal greetings last year, the pressure is on for them to better themselves this December.

Charlotte said: ''Tom and I make cards. Last year, we drew the Wise Men next to a sign saying, 'Bethlehem this way'.

''We made about 30 cards for family and friends. Now we've got a reputation - it's a tradition that can't be broken.''

Tom Hardy Tops List Of 2012's Biggest Movie Stars (CINEMA BLEND)

Author: Sean O'Connell

Who were the biggest stars of 2012? Well, a lot of that depends on what your definition of “biggest” would be.

Few people could argue that they had a bigger year than Jennifer Lawrence, who had one smash hit in The Hunger Games and is closing off the year with Oscar buzz for her performance in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook. At the same time, Kristen Stewart closed off her massive Twilight franchise with Breaking Dawn: Part 2, had a summer hit with Snow White and the Huntsman, generated a few critical raves for On the Road and even notched her own tabloid scandal thanks to an ill-timed kiss with her Huntsman director.

Both ladies make a new list released by IMDB, which tallied its STARmeter rankings for the year to simply see which celebrities marked the most page views. Critical assessments and box-office numbers weren’t important. This was just cyber-interest generated by IMDB users, and their No. 1 selection – Tom Hardy – was somewhat surprising to me.
